John Woodmark shows youth from Neighbors For Kids (NFK) samples of the rare rough and polished Oregon Sunstones in the Blue Heron Gallery. The children were also given donations from Tally and John Woodmark to support the NFK Kids Zone programs in Depoe Bay, Oregon.  The generous donations are from:  the Wade J Woodmark Foundation, The Silver Heron Gallery, the Blue Heron, the Purple Starfish, and Desert Sun Mining & Gem Co., Inc.  John also spent time with the NFK youth talking about how unique his Oregon Sunstone mines are, what the gems look like when they come out of the ground and how they are processed into fine jewelry.  He even showed them a one-of-a-kind necklace he is making with the center stone hand carved by a Tiffany jeweler.  The students pictured above returned to NFK later in the afternoon and shared what they learned from this special field trip that provided a fun mix of education and exposure to NFK stakeholders in the community we serve…

The donations will also contribute to the upcoming NFK “Golf Fore the Kids” annual fund raising event to be held at Chinook Winds Golf Resort on July 20th in Lincoln City, Oregon.  NFK is grateful to all the businesses of Depoe Bay, Oregon and surrounding communities in Lincoln County for their continued support!

Desert Sun Gems…  Quotes from this website…

“In 1985, the Oregon legislature named the gem variety of labradorite called sunstone as the state gem. Currently, there are two known (and one reported) deposits of this gem mineral in Oregon: the initial discovery 33 km north of Plush in Lake County, south-central Oregon, which has been alternately referred to as the Plush, Lakeview, Rabbit Hills, or Rabbit Basin location.”

“Sunstone is a stone of personal power, freedom, and expanded consciousness. Of all the stones on Earth, this one truly reflects the qualities of Solar Light – openness, benevolence, warmth, strength, mental clarity, and the willingness and ability to bestow blessings on others. The “Schiller” phenomenon makes the stone appear to “glow” as if it had it’s own internal light source. Sunstones can kindle the fire of leadership within those who wear or carry it.”
