“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

I was instantly reminded of the critical importance of conquering anger and hate when Nelson Mandela passed away.  It seems so unfair that this man spent 27 years in prison.  But many of us spend a lifetime in our own prison of fear, anger, and hate.  Once breaking away completely from hate and the anger what often follows is breathtaking relief, especially when it lingers for so many years in your heart causing physical pain over time.  For me, forgiveness came first once my thought process and research into the roots of my anger became clear.  It was chilling to discover how we hold on to hate and anger until we realize this morally and spiritually compromising behavior solves nothing.  I am sure that Nelson Mandela came to this powerful conclusion that gave him the same sense of personal relief, and eventually freed an entire nation, including inspiring people and nations around the globe.

I feel the loss of a great man today in Nelson Mandela.  I also feel grateful to now live my life without the anxiety, depression, and anger that comes from the heartache of hate.  Big challenges can be overcome by individuals and nations when there is forgiveness.  It is love of self and others that heals moral wounds over time.   I am very honored and grateful to have been alive during Nelson Mandela’s lifetime.  He will continue to be an inspiration to all peoples throughout the ages.  There is still much work to be done at home and around the globe to heal the invisible wounds of hate…and moral injury…
