The Neighbors for Kids Board of Directors is proud and honored to present the “Kids Zone Classic” in our 6th year as one of the most recognizable and popular charity golf tournaments on the Central Oregon Coast.  I remember as a new NFK Board Member 6 years ago when we started with dreams of building a charity golf event that would become a classic in the years to come.  We are grateful for the support of Chinook Winds Casino & Golf Resort, and PR manager, Heather Hatton, who is also the Taft HS golf coach.  Heather helped jump start the idea of promoting the best of Lincoln County’s HS golfers by donating green fees for selected students from each of the Lincoln County School District HS golf teams.  The NFK Board really felt that we should make our annual charity golf event about the K-12 kids we serve by recognizing young and aspiring golfers from our local community.  We then asked new NFK Board Director, Liz Martin, with a long history of golf experience from Agate Beach Golf Course in Newport to help us achieve lofty goals to become the very best charity golf event on the Central Oregon Coast.  Liz has done a truly amazing job chairing the event each year.

Since 1999 the success of Neighbors for Kids and signature after-school program “Kids Zone” has been a labor of love by the community as a whole.  With the passion and commitment from our staff, volunteers, and the NFK Board of Directors, we can now call ourselves the “Kids Zone Golf Classic!”  We are especially thankful to Chinook Winds Casino & Golf Resort and our many sponsors who have help make this event NFK’s largest fund raiser of the year.  The proceeds all contribute to a continued effort to offer the finest after-school, and summer camp education and enrichment programs on the Central Oregon Coast.  NFK is also a partner of the LCSD 21st Century Community Learning Center.

I can’t wait to get out on the course on July 18th in a foursome with my neighbors from the community of LIttle Whale Cove in Depoe Bay.  We all look forward to the fun and camaraderie of our entire community sharing in this amazing annual event to benefit “Kids Zone” in Depoe Bay, Oregon.

I am so proud of the work we do at Neighbors for Kids, Depoe Bay, Oregon!  I am also honored to have been part of this outstanding after-school program as a board member for the last 5 years.  It has been the best work of my life!

Even when we are away on vacation, I get fun reminders everyday like the photo above showing our children reading “big books” from our new library.  In cooperation with the Lincoln County School District (LCSD) and the “21st Century Community Learning Center Program,” we take literacy development very seriously as a key priority during the hours of 3pm-6pm.  We also team up with parents and volunteers for additional support during a monthly evening or Saturday event through our “Family Literacy Program.”

Although we are having a great time getting away for two weeks enjoying visits with family and friends and the beautiful weather in Southern California, I am anxious to get home and get back to the work I love, helping Neighbors for Kids succeed as a sustainable 21st Century after-school model for the future.  The children and families in Lincoln County Oregon are the big winners!  It is an honor to be part of the NFK team of staff and volunteers who make a difference each and every day for kids…

Should Kids Understand the Value of Mindfulness?

Teaching Mindfulness and Meditation to Children…  Quote from the article,

Planting the Seeds of Mindfulness

By

Earlier this morning, my daughter has asked me if I had meditated after I woke up, and it just so happens that I had, so I knew meditation was on her mind. As she sat at the dining room table, sobbing into her cereal, I told her that one reason I meditate is so I can practice choosing my thoughts, so I can get better at keeping the ones I want and getting ride of the ones I don’t.

As vice chair of Neighbors for Kids, I have the privilege and opportunity to work closely with our staff and the children as part of my role as a board member for this amazing after-school program in Depoe Bay, Oregon.  Our program is growing with many new kids registering for the start of the new school year and a very popular summer camp well underway.  Our kids become very excited and busy with recreation and academic programs centered in a core learning curriculum known as “STEAM,”  A Framework for Teaching Across the Disciplines.   We are also an after-school site for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers project in collaboration with the Lincoln County School District (LCSD).

Our teachers and volunteers take a few minutes before each class to help students relax and refocus…a mindfulness exercise.  The exercise is as simple as staying quiet for 3 minutes with some deep breathing and positive thoughts.  Often children are distracted because of the challenges of socializing and sometimes from sad thoughts.  I could easily see that taking a little time for meditation with the kids helps them get ready for a new learning experience.  The short break between programs also helps us adults do a better job of mentoring and teaching kids as well.

I have written often in this blog about the topic of “mindfulness”  (click highlighted text for video clip) in the context of life after trauma for adults.  But the practice and benefits of meditation or mindfulness therapy definitely apply broadly as a way to relax for people of all ages.  Children in particular get stressed out the same as adults.  We all need a mindful timeout a few times a day to stay calm and focused on the joy of living, learning, and growing.

Start at birth to build healthy minds by singing and reading to children…

Early child literacy…key to healthy minds… Quote from this website article by the New Your Times…

“In between dispensing advice on breast-feeding and immunizations, doctors will tell parents to read aloud to their infants from birth, under a new policy that the American Academy of Pediatrics will announce on Tuesday.”

In my own work with children as vice chair of Neighbors for Kids (click here) in Depoe Bay, Oregon, literacy programs are a high priority.  We are building a library along with information technology learning resources.  As part of the US Department of Education, “21st Century Community Learning Centers” (click here) goals, monthly literacy nights with parents and kids called “read and feed” started this year and has become highly popular.  This program is a collaboration with Lincoln County School District (LCDS) (click here) to build sustainable after-school programs at key sites within the county.

Even more important to me as a child advocate and author, is the value of engaging in positive ways with kids at a very early age at home and in schools.  At risk kids in particular often come from stressful homes that can cause emotional neglect and abuse.  Parents, teachers, and mentors can help mitigate the risk of long term emotional damage to these children by practicing reading and singing for just a few minutes a day at home.  Kids are more likely to be comfortable at school engaging in fun literacy programs knowing their parents are doing the same as a regular practice at home.

It is often challenging to pay attention to your children at home following a hectic day and in dealing with life challenges.  Please know kids inhale the pain of parents and store it.  As a parent, you can provide a more positive balance and foundation at home by taking a little time each day reading and singing to your child.  It is the kind of quality time with your kids that makes a huge difference for the entire family and helps manage stressful home circumstances…
