In all the research writing my book, Reconciliation: A Son’s Story, and in continuing this effort through my Blog, there is one common thread for veterans as they transition back to a healthy civilian life. It is social engagement and passion! Finding a new path to happiness and success is typically discovered through doing work you love and making a difference for the larger good. Archie’s Acres is an organic farm near San Diego, California started by a decorated Iraq combat Marine veteran Colin and his wife Karen.
“Archi’s Acres™ VSAT was a result solely of Colin’s need to serve his brothers and sisters in arms and Karen’s need to have him serve from home. We are always flattered when other organizations want to claim our mission was inspired by them. It really was and is that simple. As other organizations are formed and want to reach out to Veterans and active duty military and introduce them to Agriculture. We say “Right on”
Archie’s Acres is a new business model working effectively for veterans who desire a future in agriculture and sustainable farming. Collaborations with accredited schools and funding from other sources has allowed Archie’s to grow and for similar models to emerge. This is an excellent example of the best way we can support our heroes who fought for us when they return home. It is also an idea that can take on a broader role in providing a career path for younger adults who acquire a passion for agricultural studies and a potential career in organic farming.
Go to the above website and learn more. The video of how the farm evolved while Colin was on tour in Iraq is very moving.
